ALLIANCE, Ohio – It's a tough task. On the road, to begin league play, over two hours north, weekend night, falling behind 2-0 , against a host team that is also undefeated.
That's what the No. 13-ranked Otterbein men's soccer team had to take on, and prove to themselves, Saturday evening under the lights at Mount Union Stadium. But, don't you worry, the Cardinals scored four unanswered goals across the final 50 minutes to secure a come-from-behind victory.
Mount Union, entering the night 7-0-1, absorbs its first loss of the season after allowing more goals (4) in the match than it had this season collectively (3).
Otterbein, going unbeaten in September for the first time since 2001, begins October on the same note in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener for both teams. The Cards now stand 7-0-2 this fall.
Mount Union opened the night strong on its home turf, taking a 2-0 lead after goals in the 25th and 38th minutes. Â Otterbein got one back just before intermission, as
Liam Heard found
Nathan Neal (off an initial free pass from
Will Isaac) for a smooth header around the 41:35 mark to slice the deficit in half.
The Cardinals kept the momentum to begin the second half, receiving an equalizer from reigning Isaac in the 64th minute. He dribbled 15 yards past the defense before beating the keeper lower left.
Isaac, the reigning OAC Offensive Player of the Week, then helped manufacture the go-ahead score in the 72nd minute on a free kick. He roped his shot into a wall of traffic, which included roughly 14 players and Neal at the center, before seeing it find the back of the net.
Otterbein stayed aggressive in posting an insurance goal in the 83rd, as a corner kick from Isaac was headed in (far post) perfectly by
Joshua Conroy to leave little doubt in the outcome.
The Cardinals finished with a 12-8 shot advantage in a match that saw 31 combined fouls. Otterbein keeper
Andrew McIlvoy made three stops in earning the win.
Otterbein will stay on the road to continue league play next week, heading to Marietta come Wednesday night for a first kick t 7 p.m.
