WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein men's soccer team finished on the low side of a disappointing result with visiting Marietta College Thursday night, dropping a 1-0 overtime contest during cold, windy and rainy conditions at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals, now 1-1 on the season, saw the better of the stats in a very tightly-played first half by entering the break with a 6-1 shot advantage.
Marietta countered in the second half with a couple flurries, including multiple corner kicks on one sequence midway through. Neither side was able to break through, however, and the match headed for an extra session.
The Pioneers (2-0) came up with a difference-making push in the closing minutes of the first overtime, as Reggie Grayek took a throw-in on the far side and dribbled 20 yards upfield. He ultimately beat Otterbein goalkeeper
Andrew McIlvoy lower right to help his team escape.
That final rocket gave Marietta a final 9-8 shot advantage on the evening, while both teams attempted six corner kicks. The loss snaps a five-match winning streak in the series for Otterbein, which will close the week Sunday afternoon at Baldwin Wallace.
