Box Score UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The last time Otterbein and John Carroll squared up in men's soccer at Don Shula Stadium, it was the host Blue Streaks that used an early goal and emerged 1-0 to win the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Championship.
Unfortunately, a similar script and the same outcome was in effect Thursday night during the rematch. John Carroll manufactured a goal in the sixth minute, and kept Otterbein off the scoreboard the remainder of the way to post a shutout.
The Cardinals, who beat Mount Union in their season opener, now fall to 1-2-1 on this shortened season. The Blue Streaks remain unbeaten with a 3-0 record.
Both teams started settling in before JCU strung together a nice scoring sequence. Izac Coleman played a cross into the box, where Jared Mattei went up to finish a header over a Cardinal defender and into the upper-right portion of the net.
Otterbein tried to press forward but wasn't able to rip off many opportunities, as John Carroll ultimately finished with an 8-6 shot advantage for the night. Cardinal goalie
Andrew McIlvoy and counterpart Connor Robinson, the reigning OAC Defensive Player of the Week, both made two saves.
JCU held a 7-4 edge on corner kicks, and has now held off Otterbein by a one-goal margin in the last three meetings.
Otterbein will get to finish out the week at home, looking to get back in the win column Sunday afternoon when Heidelberg comes to town. First kick at Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
