WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein welcomed the first place Mount Union Purple Raiders to town on a beautiful Saturday afternoon for their annual strike out cancer games. The Cardinals walked it off in game one with a
Katrina Wierzbicki two run homerun to left field, but fell in the second game, 12-3, after five innings.
The Cardinals are now 8-6 overall and 5-5 within Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play while Mount Union now finds themselves 12-2 overall and 9-1 in OAC action.
GAME ONE:
The Cardinals scored their first run of the afternoon with a
Savannah McCoppin double that brought
Isabelle Fisher around to score. Mount Union answered in the third inning scoring their only run of the game.
After a pitching duel the rest of the way, and some key execution in the field by both sides to strand runners, the Cardinals took their turn to bat in the bottom of the seventh.
The Cards got a runner on when Fisher earned a walk, McCoppin then sacrificed herself with a well-placed bunt to move Fisher to second. Senior short stop
Katrina Wierzbicki stepped to the plate and found a pitched she liked, sending it over the fence in left field for the walk-off win.
Brook Crosby picked up her fourth win of the year in a complete game effort.
GAME TWO:
Mount Union jumped all over Cardinal pitching in game two, scoring nine runs in their half of the first inning. The Cards answered in their chance to bat with a
Hannah Dobrinick RBI single and a
Macy Allen SAC fly.
The Raiders pushed their lead up to 11-2 in the third and scored another fourth.
Maria Herron scored the Cardinals third run of the game on a wild pitch but the Mount Union lead was too much to overcome as the game ended in five innings.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Both sides will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for more doubleheader action at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in Alliance.
