Men's Soccer Stuns Heidelberg in Overtime

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinals needed extra time to knock off Heidelberg, 1-0, but men's soccer found its way back into the win column Sunday afternoon. The win snaps a scoreless streak that saw them drop two games and tie another.

The Cardinals are now 2-2-1 on the season while Heidelberg falls to 0-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both sides saw potential scoring opportunities throughout the first half but Heidelberg failed to force Andrew McIlvoy to make any saves.
  • The Cardinals however saw two potential scores turned away by Ben Patrizi and his defense.

  • Otterbein turned up the pressure throughout the second half, firing 11 shots.

  • Heidelberg was forced to make seven saves in the second 45, with the majority being made by defenders stepping into the net.

  • The sides played to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes and went into overtime.

  • Just 59 seconds into the extra period defender Seth Smith, who had just checked into the game, corralled a ball in the box off a Will Isaac cross and beat Patrizi for the game winner.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Cardinals took a total of 17 shots throughout the extended contest while Heidelberg managed just five, and only one on frame.

  • Corner kick chances were also dominated by Otterbein with an 11 to 2 advantage.

  • Otterbein is now 5-0-1 against Heidelberg since 2015, with two of the wins coming in double overtime.
