Take Two! Softball Sweeps Capital in Saturday Action

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein Softball got back on track Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader with crosstown Rival Capital.

The Cardinals manufactured some runs in game one to win, 5-1, and gave the Crusaders all they could handle in game two, ending things in six innings, 10-2.

GAME ONE:
  • The Crusaders jumped on the board first scoring their only run of the game in the first inning.

  • Otterbein finally broke the seal in the second inning when Hannah Lewis sent a ball deep into left center field for a long RBI single.

  • Lewis came around to score in the inning when Savannah McCoppin earned an RBI single with a long fly ball that dropped into right field, she was tagged out in a run down trying to advance to second on the throw.

  • The Cards collected three more runs in the fourth with a Megan Payne RBI, a Lewis double to left center and another RBI single for McCoppin.

  • Brook Crosby was shutdown in the circle for the Cardinals, striking out nine batters in a complete game effort to earn her sixth win of the season.
GAME TWO:
  • After the bats came to life in game one they stayed that way for the back end of the doubleheader, with Otterbein jumping out to a 2-0 lead after one.

  • The Crusaders answered with a solo home run in the second but a Jess Gunter single soon after once again pulled the Cards ahead, 3-1.

  • The Cardinals did even more damage in the fourth, plating three runs including Mackenzie Bates picking up her first RBI of the season.

  • Capital added a run in the top of the fifth, but Otterbein put its foot on the gas in the sixth to score four runs and end the game early. Megan Payne, Hannah Lewis and Sage Jenkins all recorded RBI-singles in the inning.

  • Jess Gunter collected the win, she gave up just three hits and struck out nine batters in six innings of work. She also collected 3-RBIs to help herself.
