SOFT: Cards and Pioneers Split Friday Action

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein and Marietta Softball split a Friday afternoon doubleheader after a rain delay pushed the 2 p.m. start time back by 50 minutes. The Pioneers took the win in the first game, 6-3, and then the Cardinals won game two by a final of 6-4.

Otterbein is now 13-20 overall and 10-19 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Marietta finds themselves with a 12-18 record in both categories.

GAME ONE:

Marietta's Maddi Liston carried a no-hitter through four innings while enjoying a one run lead. The first hit she gave up in the fifth was to Macy Allen, a double down the left-field line. Allen would come around to score after a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Savannah McCoppin followed by an RBI single from Taylor Baran.

Liston held the Cards off the board in the sixth but then allowed the game to get tied up at 3-3 after she walked the bases loaded. With the bases juiced Sage Jenkins and Katrina Wierzbicki both earned RBI walks and the game went into extra innings.

In the extra frame Marietta pulled away to score three runs. The Cards saw two base runners in their chance to bat but one was put out on a fielder's choice play and the other was stranded on a strikeout to end the game.

GAME TWO:
Jess Gunter started the game by loading the bases, she did not allow a hit, and giving up one run before she worked her way out of the jam. The Cardinals got the run back though when Sage Jenkins came home to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning.

Hannah Dobrinick gave the hosts a 2-1 lead after she singled to right field in her first at bat, plating Wierzbicki. She scored another run in the third and then the Cards scored two more in the fourth, including Gunter helping herself with an RBI single right back up the middle.

Marietta added two more scores in the fifth and sixth but could not claw their way back as Erin Vonderwell came on in relief to earn a save, her first of the season.

Gunter earned the win after she went 5.2 innings with six strike outs.

LOOKING AHEAD:

With Otterbein hosting graduation this weekend the two sides will return to the diamond on Monday afternoon in Marietta. Game times are slated for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
