SOFT: Cardinals Split Extended Series with Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – Otterbein and Marietta finally hit the softball diamond Tuesday afternoon after rain pushed the games back from Monday and then again from a 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. start.

The Cardinals battled back from an early deficit in game one to eventually win, 7-6, in 10 innings before falling in a darkness shortened game two, 4-1.

GAME ONE: Otterbein – 7, Marietta – 6 (10 inn.)
  • Marietta jumped out to an early four run lead after the first inning.

  • Hannah Lewis helped chip away at the lead in the second inning when she hit her first home run of the season over the wall in right center field.

  • The Cards tacked on a pair of runs in the third inning with an Isabelle Fisher SAC bunt and a Katlyn Kramer double to right center, her first of her career.

  • In the fourth inning Otterbein took a 6-4 lead after a Katrina Wierzbicki double, a Macy Allen SAC fly and a Hannah Dobrinick RBI single.

  • Marietta battled back and tied things back up in their last chance to bat with a two-run home run.

  • In the tenth inning the Cardinals took the lead when Lewis scored on a wild pitch.

  • Erin Vonderwell picked up her first win of the season after she came on in relief of Brook Crosby in the eighth inning. Crosby struck out nine Pioneers in seven innings of work while Vonderwell sat down five more.

GAME TWO: Marietta – 4, Otterbein – 1 (5 inn.)
  • Otterbein flipped the script and took a 1-0 lead after the second inning thanks to a Taylor Baran double that plated Dobrinick.

  • Marietta, with daylight running out, then answered in their chance to bat with a solo home run and an RBI single.

  • The Pioneers added an RBI single in the fifth, and the game was called there.

  • Jess Gunter endured the loss, but added to her strikeout total with three more in five innings of work.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Cardinals will regroup on Wednesday before they head to Ada on Thursday for more doubleheader action with the Polar Bears. Game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
