WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The No. 20-ranked John Carroll Blue Streaks proved to be too much for host Otterbein Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, as the Cardinals finished a three-game homestand as part of Homecoming Weekend.
John Carroll, ranked in the latest D3football.com national poll, entered the game off a bye week and got its first victory (41-17) of the season. JCU dropped a 21-14 contest to Washington & Jefferson in its season opener.
Otterbein, now 0-3, will look to regroup before hitting the road across the next month. The team will have three road games, sandwiched around a bye week, before returning home in late October.
John Carroll build a first-half lead behind running back Demerius Goodwin, who scampered 14 times for 152 yards and three touchdowns prior to intermission. Otterbein quarterback
Bryce Hall had 202 aerial yards before the break, and the Cards got on the board thanks to a seven-yard rushing score from
Jay Bradley.
However, John Carroll led 31-10 at halftime and never looked back. The Blue Streaks used a variety of options in the backfield, holding possession for nearly 34 minutes of game time and keeping the Cardinals at arm's length. JCU had 329 yards on the ground collectively.
Otterbein's
Jalan Minney caught eight passes for 124 yards, including a highlight reel, toe-tapping grab up in front of the John Carroll sideline in the third quarter. The Cardinals kept playing until the final horn, as
Jordan Bost-Floyd broke a 73-yard touchdown run (sparked by a block from Minney near the end) on the game's final offensive play.
Hall finished 30 for 45 passing with 281 yards. Linebacker
Greg Nolder matched his previous career-high with 14 tackles, doubling up the next-closest teammate.
Tyshawn Jones and Luke Brown helped lead a JCU defense that had eight tackles for loss.
Otterbein will be back in action next weekend at Ohio Northern, with kickoff inside Dial-Roberson Stadium set for 1:30 p.m.
