ADA, Ohio – Otterbein moved the ball well for a good chunk of Saturday's game at Ohio Northern, but unfortunately didn't end up with much to show for the effort (on the scoreboard) in a tough 56-7 loss at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Cardinals, playing their first road game of the fall, racked up more than 400 yards of total offense but fell victim to the Polar Bears as Ohio Athletic Conference play continued. Ohio Northern improved to 3-1 on its schedule.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- It was all Ohio Northern early behind reigning OAC Offensive Player of the Week Brody Hahn. The quarterback engineered drives that resulted in scoring plays from 20, 26, 71 and 13 yards out. ONU built a 28-0 lead as a result.
Â
- Otterbein moved the ball offensively in the first half despite not having as many points to show for it. The Cardinals were unable to convert a 4th and 2 just across midfield and missed a short field goal after a 16-play drive…
Â
- Otterbein eventually hit the board when Bryce Hall connected with Marcellus Vanderkodde on a 25-yard strike. Linebacker Greg Nolder then intercepted a pass in the end zone to keep the deficit what it was (28-7) entering the break.
Â
- The Cardinals marched down the field on their second drive after intermission, leading to a 4th and Goal at the 5. Otterbein, trailing by 21 points, opted to kick it. The field-goal attempt was blocked and returned 94 yards for an ONU touchdown.
Â
- Ohio Northern added a pair of 70-yard scoring drives following that as the margin ballooned.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Ohio Northern finished with a narrow 425-422 edge in total yards. But the Polar Bears (with three interceptions) scored on offense, defense and special teams.
Â
- Otterbein moved the chains 26 times, was 12 of 19 on third down, and posted a healthy 39:06 time of possession.
Â
- Siraj Muhammad, who missed last week's Homecoming game, ran 21 times for 84Â yards in his return.
Â
- Jeb Jones and Robert Jordan both tallied 65-plus yards receiving.
Â
- Nolder led the defense with seven tackles in addition to his first-half takeaway. He has 39 stops through four games this season, second-most in the OAC.
Â
- Hahn finished 21 of 31 with five TD's on the home side. His top target, Austin Eick, corralled eight passes for 158 and three scores.
UP NEXT:
Otterbein will stay on the road, traveling up north to Alliance for a matchup with No. 3-ranked Mount Union.
