WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein football team dropped its final home game of the season Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, as Ohio Northern pulled away in the second quarter en route to a 42-7 final decision.
The Polar Bears scored three minutes into the game but still only led 7-0 after the first quarter. However, a long touchdown run from just over midfield doubled up the lead and then a 19-yard interception by the visitors would open things up even more.
ONU made it 28-0 by halftime thanks to a long passing connection from Adam Figueroa to Nick Tangeman.
Otterbein did get on the board near the end of the third quarter when
Eason Hardouin, coming in to play the second half, found
Jayland Desue on a nice misdirection pass to the left side. But the Polar Bears halted any Cardinal momentum to begin the fourth quarter and never looked back.
Northern settled with a 462-208 edge in total offense in a game that saw five combined interceptions and a pair of lost fumbles by Otterbein. The visitors were also 8 of 15 on third down.
Desue caught four passes for 69 yards while senior
Siraj Muhammad had 63 rushing yards.
Max Walden,
Colton Doup and
Justin Bartlett all made nine stops for the defense, which did make five stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Charlie Hornacek and
Vincent Fisher each had an interception for the Cards.
Otterbein will finish out their slate next weekend at nationally-ranked John Carroll, which lost a narrow 34-28 contest with No. 2-ranked Mount Union this afternoon for the OAC regular-season title.
