WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- After coming back from a run down to take the opener, 3-2, the Otterbein bats came alive in the nightcap to secure the sweep with a 10-4 victory in a nonconference twinbill on Wednesday.
GAME 1 RECAP: (W 3-2)
Trailing by a run in the bottom of the six,
Taylor Baran drew a one-out walk before being lifted for pinch runner
Chloe Clark.
Isa Lewis followed with a double to deep right center. Lewis' double scored Clark from first to tie the game at 2-2. The throw home to get Clark went over the Ohio Wesleyan catcher's head which allowed Lewis to cross the dish for the go-ahead run.
Cardinal starting pitcher
Jess Gunter retired the first two batters in the seventh before surrendering a single up the middle to OWU's Alyssa Back. Back was erased from the base paths when she was thrown out by catcher
Sage Jenkins trying to steal second.
Lewis finished 2 for 3 at the place with the lone extra-base hit of the game. Gunter improved to 5-2 on the year after surrendering two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Savannah McCoppin drew two free passes, stole a base and scored the game's first run on a base hit by
Caroline Heller.
GAME 2 RECAP: (W 10-4)
After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals plated seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Hannah Lewis knocked in three of the seven runs with a fourth-inning triple and a fifth-inning single.
Heller opened the scoring with a double to left center that scored
Megan Payne and McCoppin. The Bishops cut the deficit to three with four runs in the top of the sixth, but a three-run bottom of the frame set the final score.
Hannah Lewis finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run score.
Isa Lewis also recorded two hits with a stolen base, while Payne and Heller each drove in a pair or runs.
Bryn Grabowski (7-2) bounced back from yesterday's tough-luck loss to earn the victory. She scattered six hits and struck out four in all but one inning of work.
ON DECK:
Otterbein (12-4) returns to Ohio Athletic Conference action this Saturday when they host a doubleheader with Heidelberg at 1 p.m.
