UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Make it three wins over the last four meetings against John Carroll for the Otterbein women's basketball team, as the Cardinals absolutely stymied the host Blue Streaks in a 62-48 decision Wednesday night at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center up north.
The Cards jump to 8-6 on the year as a whole with the double-digit triumph, using a big second half to break open a two-point game at intermission. Otterbein also gets to 4-3 within the OAC while knocking the Blue Streaks a notch below .500 against the league.
THE SCRIPT:
- A low-scoring first quarter remained a one-possession contest before Otterbein created a six-point gap (20-14) midway through the second.
Â
- JCU used a 10-4 run to tie the game but Jenna Hoschouer made a jumper in the paint to beat the halftime buzzer, giving the Cards a slim 26-24 cushion.
Â
- The Cardinals erupted for 21 points in the third frame, getting three-straight buckets from Hoschouer in the opening two minutes followed by a smooth trifecta from sharpshooter Natalie Galaida.
Â
- Kathleen DeCarlo, back playing in the arena named after her late grandfather, and Olivia Majors each contributed multiple scores down the stretch of the third to help Otterbein's lead reach double figures.
Â
- JCU mustered just nine points in the final quarter, shooting just 2 of 15 in the period as Otterbein expanded the margin late.
Â
NOTABLE STATS:
- Hoschouer continued her strong play by scoring double figures in a sixth-consecutive game, averaging nearly 17 points in the span. She was 8-of-11 shooting this time around in addition to defensive pressure… coming up with three steals and two blocks.
Â
- Four other Cardinals scored eight-plus points, including a nice 10 and 6 effort from center Natalie Allen.
Â
- Otterbein shot 48% for the game and a nice 55% in the second half. John Carroll finished 16 of 65 overall and a tough 2 of 17 behind the arc.
Â
- A total of 11 different Cardinals saw the floor, with Ella Nagel corralling another seven rebounds off the bench.
Â
MOVING FORWARD:
- Otterbein gets to stay at home once again this weekend, hosting Mount Union come Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
