TUCSON, Ariz. – The Otterbein baseball team continued making its presence known at the Kino Sports Complex on Friday afternoon, working from behind to win a key game against Gustavus Adolphus by a final tally of 9-4.
The Cardinals, off since Tuesday, used a big seventh inning to fly back and snag another victory. Gustavus Adolphus entered receiving votes in the national poll and fresh off a 28-14 campaign last spring.
HOW IT WENT DOWN:
- Otterbein fell behind (2-0) early but knotted the score in the middle innings, getting a lofty RBI-double from Zach Franz and sac fly off the bat of Brayden Carter in the next frame.
Â
- The Gusties responded with a huge two-run homer in the bottom half but Otterbein stayed right there, slicing that deficit back to a one-run game thanks to Logan Ullom smacking an RBI-single through the right side in the sixth.
Â
- Gustavus Adolphus surrendered the lead in the top-half of the seventh when the Cards whipped together four runs. Carter and Noah Sprowls drew initial walks before Jamie Perebzak snuck a ball through the left side.
Â
- The next two batters struck out but Franz and Adam Folk helped deliver a two-out rally. Franz walked after a long/patient at-bat and Folk laid down a perfect bunt single, before multiple Cardinals hustled around to score after an errant throw to first.
Â
- Sprowls added insurance runs in the eighth with a 2-RBI double down the left-field line. The margin would be more than sufficient for freshman reliever Sam Sethna, who tossed three scoreless innings before giving way to Braydon McCloskey in the ninth.
STAT CHECK:
- Ullom hit 3 for 4 while Sprowls and Perebzak both had multi-hit days as well. The Cards had 10 altogether.
Â
- Both sides combined to leave 17 runners stranded on base.
Â
- Sethna improved to a 3-0 record on the bump after another nice relief effort.
Â
- Jackson Peloquin took a no-decision as the Otterbein starter, striking our five hitters in five innings.
