Otterbein and Trine Fight to Scoreless Draw in Sunday Showdown

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It marked yet another physical and testy non-conference showdown between Otterbein and Trine on the soccer field, with this latest installment ending in a scoreless draw after both sides came up empty on various chances during the holiday weekend.

HOW IT WENT DOWN:

The Cardinals saw most of the offensive chances before halftime, with the Isaac brothers both attempting shots from near the sideline to begin some forward movement. Mark Wischmeyer saw an up-close header (off a corner kick) saved in front of the goal, and Jayden Lunsford just missed getting to a cross at the far post shortly thereafter.

Trine mustered just one attempt on target in the first half, but Casey Thompson was there front and center to snag the curved shot and get his team going the other way.

The Thunder found a couple through balls to begin the second frame but Thompson was there again to make one save and scoop up another. Otterbein then saw perhaps its best look of the entire day when Jayden Lunsford found a window in a crowded box. Unfortunately, Trine keeper Dillon Lambert made an impressive save at close range.

Freshman Andrew Rudesill nearly put Otterbein ahead midway through the second half when a pass came near the to of the box, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Tyler Murphy ripped Trine's best opportunity down the stretch, gathering himself for a left-footed shot that soared into the chest of Thompson. The veteran Otterbein keeper corralled it seconds later to remain unscathed.

Otterbein pressed forward in the closing minutes and had a few final looks. Will Isaac saw one shot trickle wide left, another cross barely missed Carter Ely, and Isaac attempted a bicycle kick with roughly eight seconds remaining that sailed wide.

The Cardinals doubled up in shots with a 16-7 final margin and also took seven of the nine corner kicks earned on the day. Lambert made seven stops in goal for the visitors to salvage the draw.
