FAIRMONT, W Va. – After three full weeks off from competition, the Otterbein wrestling team got back on the mat to start the 2024 calendar across a full Saturday at the Fairmont State Invitational down in the Mountain State.
Otterbein finished seventh (of 19 teams) collectively at the well-rounded event featuring a mix of NCAA Division II, III and then NAIA schools.
The Cardinals landed six placers on their respective podiums by the time it was all said and done, spearheaded with a runner-up finish from
Cale Callahan at 165 lbs. He went 4-1 on the day in making the championship bout.
Freshman
Trace Williams continued his progressive inaugural campaign by taking fifth at 141 pounds, with
Andrew Sas resting a spot behind in sixth after a rugged day. He went 5-1 before medically forfeiting to Williams.
Logan Cormell (174) and
Billy Reed-Bodey (heavyweight) both took sixth in their respective weight classes. Reed-Bodey lost early but admirably worked back through the consolation ladder, and reached his match capacity before the potential fifth-place bout.
Gary Steele also walked away with a sixth-place effort at 184 pounds by winning four of his six matches on the day.
Brandon Thomas finished 3-2 at 197 pounds, racking up a pair of pins throughout the day.
Kyle De Moss and
Carter Mottley both went 2-2 in their divisions.
Otterbein will compete at the Case Western Reserve Duals next Saturday, with the opening round of bouts slated for 10 a.m.
