Men's Soccer drops 2-1 game to Wilmington

WESTERVILLE — The Otterbein men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington on Wednesday night.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (6-5-2 overall, 2-2-0 OAC), Wilmington (10-1-3 overall, 3-1-0 OAC) 
  • Venue: Memorial Stadium - Westerville, Ohio
The Game
  • Wilmington took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Parker Burke in the 19th minute.
  • Otterbein answered with a goal of its own to tie the score at 1-1 in the 33rd minute. Freshman Will Meilstrup headed a throw-in from graduate student Carter Ely, and the ball found its way to graduate student Drew Holman, who found the back of the net.
  • The teams entered halftime with the score tied at 1-1. Wilmington held a slight 8-7 edge in shots, including 4-3 in shots on goal. The Quakers also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Quakers were awarded a penalty kick in the 78th minute, and Kaden Young sent the ball past Otterbein freshman goalkeeper Jason Villalobos for what proved to be the winning margin.
  • Villalobos played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cardinals and recorded five saves.
  • Wilmington out-shot Otterbein by a 16-14 margin, including 7-5 in shots on goal, and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

  • Holman's goal was his second of the season. He now has 32 career points on 13 goals and six assists.
  • Otterbein is now 10-5-2 against Wilmington dating back to 2008.

  • In his eighth season with the program, Otterbein head coach Jason Griffiths now holds an overall record of 88-37-14.
