Women's Basketball falls 48-43 at Maine Maritime

CASTINE, Maine — The Otterbein women's basketball team fell 48-43 at Maine Maritime on Friday night.

The Basics

Otterbein Stat Leaders
  • Sophomore Abby Rawlings made a trio of 3-pointers and led Otterbein in scoring with 11 points while adding five rebounds and two assists.
  • Sophomore Anna Waskiewicz added nine points and a team-leading nine rebounds.
  • Freshman Kiara Hudgins also scored nine points while adding two rebounds and a team-best four steals.
  • Senior Maizie King and sophomore Nicole Terry had matching stat lines of three points and four rebounds.
  • Graduate student Kathleen DeCarlo added two points and five rebounds.
Game Highlights
  • First Quarter: Rawlings opened the scoring for Otterbein with a 3-pointer, and her triple with 3:29 remaining put the Cardinals up 13-6. The Mariners scored six unanswered points over the final 2:30, though, to close the gap to one, 13-12, at the end of the period.
  • Second Quarter: The Cardinals scored the first five points of the second quarter, getting two points each from sophomore Kyla Irby and Rawlings and one from King, for an 18-12 lead with 6:40 remaining. A 3-pointer from Waskiewicz put Otterbein up 21-16 with 4:57 left, and a 2-point jumper from freshman Mattie Walburn gave the Cards a 25-18 lead with 2:54 remaining. But the Mariners were able to cut the deficit to just three, 25-22, going into halftime. Rawlings led Otterbein with eight first-half points to go with five from Waskiewicz.
  • Third Quarter: MMA took a 26-25 edge early in the third period and went on to take a 39-33 lead into the fourth after outscoring Otterbein 17-8 in the frame. A layup from Hudgins had the Cardinals within two, 33-31, with 5:32 left, but the Mariners closed the quarter with a 6-2 run.
  • Fourth Quarter: The Mariners extended their lead to 11, 44-33, on a 3-pointer with 8:17 left, but Rawlings answered with a triple of her own to keep the Cardinals within striking distance. A layup followed by two free throws from Waskiewicz got Otterbein within four, 44-40, with 6:19 left, and the score remained the same until Hudgins made a pair of free throws to get the Cardinals within two with 2:20 remaining. The Mariners answered with two free throws at the other end to extend their lead to four, and Hudgins was 1-of-2 at the line to make it a 46-43 game with 1:06 left. Otterbein forced an MMA turnover coming out of a timeout but was unable to turn it into points after missing a layup. The Mariners split a pair of free throws at the other end with 25 seconds remaining en route to coming away with the 48-43 victory.
  • Key Team Stats: Otterbein shot 24.6% from the field and was 4-of-13 (30.8%) from 3-point range. Maine Maritime shot 30.2% from the field and was 3-of-23 (13%) from 3-point range. The Cardinals were 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the foul line, while the Mariners were 13-of-22 (59.1%). MMA out-rebounded Otterbein by a 52-35 margin.

  • Waskiewicz's nine rebounds marked a single-game career high.
  • Head coach Diana Noles is in her sixth year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 65-54 at the helm of the Cardinals.
