FINAL RESULTS
BEREA, Ohio – A top portion of the men's wrestling lineup was a late addition to the John Summa Invitational at Baldwin Wallace on Saturday, and represented nicely in taking sixth of 13 schools altogether. Otterbein held off D2 West Liberty State on the team leaderboard.
The Cardinals were sparked by a third-place finish from senior
Nathan Leko at 149 pounds, as the upperclassmen went 5-1 on the day en route to a well-earned podium spot. He opened with a shutout tech fall and then consecutive pins, before enduring a setback to reigning national champ Michael Petrella.
But Leko regrouped for another 15-0 tech fall and then a well deserved 7-3 decision in his last showdown against Joshua Maslyn of St. John Fisher.
Sophomore
Logan Cormell (174) also hit the podium in eighth place, beginning his day with a pair of quick pins before also dropping a bout with the top seed. He started working back with a major decision and then medically forfeited the seventh-place contest.
Gary Steele and
Kyle De Moss helped garner nice points in the 184-pound bracket, with Steele making the semifinals after a tech fall and narrow decision. He then churned out fifth place on a gritty 3-2 decision, while De Moss registered a pair of falls in the same consolation ladder to earn seventh.
Jacob Williams (157) enjoyed two bonus-point victories, including a pin in 89 seconds, to ultimately land eighth place overall in his division.
Noah Houchins (125),
Trace Williams (141),
Declan Jewitt (165) and
Brandon Thomas (197) also grabbed a victory each. Williams notched a major while Jewitt/Thomas manufactured pins, with Thomas going into the third period for his.
Another portion of the Otterbein roster will head up north to the Whizzer Open at Henry Ford CC on Sunday.
