FORT MYERS, Fla. – A trio of right arms on the mound controlled the entire day in a sweep over Rhode Island College at Terry Park, besting the Anchormen in consecutive games by scores of 8-0 and 9-1 respectively.
The Cardinals get a timely bounce-back effort after Friday's disappoint result with Hiram, thanks in large part to pitchers
Kyler Archual,
Bryson Bell and
Nick Plucinski limiting RIC practically all day.
GAME 1 RECAP:
- Otterbein put two quick runs on the board in the first thanks to RBI-singles from Brayden Quincel and Gavin Thompson in the middle of the lineup.
Â
- The minor support (initially) would end up being more than enough for Archual, who carried a no-hitter into the fifth while facing just two over the minimum leading up to that point.
Â
- Otterbein methodically added to its lead and created a more comfortable gap with three runs in the fifth, all coming on a two-out rally that saw Brayden Carter single down the left-field line and Jamie Perebzak walk with the bases loaded.
Â
- Archual ended the day with eight strikeouts and just two hits allowed, improving to 3-0 on the bump this season. Carter hit 3 for 5 in the leadoff spot while Noah Sprowls was on base four times through a variety of ways.
Â
- Otterbein nearly busted the game open on multiple occasions, stranding 10 runners in the opener and ending two frames with the bases juiced.
GAME 2 RECAP:
- Bryson Bell picked right back up where his fellow teammate left off, keeping the opponent stymied while his offense continued a similar theme with two quick runs in the first.
Â
- The Anchormen, going 30-13 last year and finishing runner-up in the Little East Conference, forced Bell into a jam come the fourth inning after three-straight hits loaded the bags with one out. But he responded admirably to surrender just one run (RBI groundout) before a flyout to left field got him back to the dugout.
Â
- Otterbein blew the doors off shortly after with seven runs in the bottom of the frame, sending 12 hitters to the plate and forcing two pitching changes. Caden Kirker and Quincel both rocketed RBI-doubles during the stretch while many others furthered the rally.
Â
- Plucinski came on to shove the final three innings and get some much-needed work on the trip, earning his second save with three productive/shutout frames. He and Bell each fanned four batters to give the pitching staff a total of 16 K's across the twinbill.
Â
SUNDAY FUNDAY:
Due to a weird rescheduling and Augustana coming off the original slate, Otterbein and Ohio Wesleyan (separated by just 15 miles back home) will instead play in the main stadium at 9 a.m. The Cardinals will then resituate to fly back later in the evening.
