Men's Soccer dominates early, shuts out Oberlin in physical match

OBERLIN — The Otterbein men's soccer team struck fast and held firm, netting three first-half goals while freshman goalkeeper Jason Villalobos secured his third shutout of the season in a 3-0 win at Oberlin on Wednesday evening.

The Game
  • The Cardinals struck early, with senior Nick Isaac creating a goal for himself just 9:07 into the game. 
  • Just 41 seconds later, graduate student Carter Ely disrupted Oberlin's offense, positioning himself perfectly to score a goal and put Ottebein up 2-0.
  • Following a save attempt by Oberlin goalkeeper Grayson Benson, graduate student Mark Wischmeyer tapped in the third and final goal of the match in the 26th minute, sealing the first half.
  • Entering the second half, Otterbein held a 6-5 advantage in shots while maintaining a clean sheet. 
  • Otterbein freshman goalkeeper Jason Villalobos played all 90 minutes, making five saves to secure the shutout.
  • A total of eight yellow cards (five to Otterbein and three to Oberlin) were issued during what was a physical game.
  • Oberlin finished with a 13-12 edge in shots but trailed 8-5 in shots on goal. Both teams attempted three corner kicks.

 Notables
  • In his eighth season with the program, Otterbein head coach Jason Griffiths now holds an overall record of 85-35-12.
  • Isaac's goal was his third of the season. He now has 25 points on nine goals and seven assists in his two-year Otterbein career.
  • Ely scored a goal for the second straight game, giving him two on the season. He has 31 career points on 11 goals and nine assists.
  • Wednesday marked Wischmeyer's first goal of the season, giving him 21 career points on six goals and nine assists.
  • Villalobos earned his third shutout of the season, facing five shots on goal.
