Men's Soccer battles No. 3 Kenyon to scoreless draw

WESTERVILLE — The Otterbein men's soccer team battled No. 3 Kenyon to a hard-fought scoreless draw on Friday night.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (4-3-1 overall), Kenyon (5-0-3 overall)
  • Venue: Memorial Stadium - Westerville, Ohio
The Game
  • Scoring opportunities were hard to come by in what was a scoreless first half. Otterbein finished the first 45 minutes with a 4-3 edge in shots, including 2-0 in shots on goal. Both teams attempted one corner kick.
  • Neither team was able to break through on the scoreboard in the second half, but the Cardinals generated several scoring chances down the stretch. Otterbein attempted five shots over the final eight minutes, including solid opportunities on goal from junior Drew Boettcher and sophomore Josh Lord.
  • Freshman Jason Villalobos played all 90 minutes in goal for Otterbein and recorded one save.
  • Otterbein finished with a 12-5 edge in shots and 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Quote
  • Head coach Jason Griffiths: "That's a really good Kenyon team. They're No. 3 in the country, so we had to be at our best today with the chances we had and the chances we gave them, which were very minimal, so the guys were kind of disappointed to get the tie at the end of the game. We've been building and getting better and doing a better job defensively as a team. I thought we did really well tonight in minimizing what they wanted to do, and we could've scored a couple goals there at the end. We're not satisfied with a tie, but it's a good result against a really good team. We need to build on this now and try to turn these ties into wins."
 Notables
  • Friday marked the first meeting between Otterbein and Kenyon since 2017 when they faced each other twice, including a 3-2 Cardinal victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • In his eighth season with the program, Otterbein head coach Jason Griffiths now holds an overall record of 85-35-13.
  • Kenyon is ranked No. 3 nationally in this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Top 25 Poll. The Owls are 2-0-1 against ranked teams this season.
