No. 22 Cardinals power past Polar Bears

ADA,Ohio – Another night of career performances from Emerson Baum and Olivia Vitaz helped the No. 22 Otterbein volleyball team earn a 3-1 victory at Ohio Northern. Baum – the reigning OAC Player of the Week – dominated the attack, posting a career-best 24 kills. Vitaz dished out 57 assists in the win, tying her career-high that came in 2024.

In the opening set, Ohio Northern continued to keep the set tight, eventually tying things up at 25. Back to back kills from Baum secured the victory, seeing Otterbein win 27-25 in the opener. Similar to the first set, the Polar Bears kept the score close with the Cardinals. As Otterbein trailed 22-21, a kill from Maddie Mergen evened the set at 22. Otterbein regained the lead thanks to an ONU attack error, but the Polar Bears had an answer to tie things up at 23. Baum provided the spark for the visitors with a kill to vault Otterbein to set point. The sophomore slammed the door shut with a kill to end the second set, with a 25-23 win for the Cardinals.

Trailing 20-17 in the third, a Mergen kill swung the momentum back in favor of Otterbein. Despite the Cardinals cutting the score to 24-23, the Polar Bears took the third set by a 25-23 margin.

In the fourth set, the visitors made quick work of ONU, taking care of the Polar Bears 25-11. The set was highlighted by a 9-0 run that saw Makenzie Schellenberger fire off three aces.

Mergen and Scott ended the night with 11 kills apiece, while Chandler Crowell and Brooke Barb each added eight. Defensively, Ashley Kefauver shined with a team-high 23 digs, just one shy of her career best. Vitaz collected 15 digs for the Cardinals, as Schellenberger, Grace Ganz and Emma Steiger all tallied double digits.

The Cardinals return home Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against Capital in the Battle for the Oar. It will serve as Senior Day, with festivities taking place in pregame.
