No. 22 volleyball rolls to win on Senior Day

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In dominant fashion, the No. 22 Otterbein University volleyball team made quick work of Capital University on Senior Day. The Cardinals won in straight sets limiting Capital to a -.022 hitting percentage for the match.

Prior to the match, the Cardinals celebrated its senior class of Maddie Mergen, Annie Casper, Brooke Barb, Kayla Lechnir, Grace Ganz, Olivia Jurcevic and Olivia Vitaz. With the win, Otterbein improves to 20-4 overall, reaching the 20-win threshold in eight of the last nine seasons. It marks the 14th straight win over the Comets, keeping the Oar in Westerville in the crosstown rivalry.

A 9-1 run in the first set highlighted the opening set victory for the hosts. Two aces from Emma Steiger and a pair of Vitaz kills lifted Otterbein to a commanding 16-8 lead midway through the set. A kill from Emerson Baum pushed Otterbein to set point, and Ganz finished off the set with an ace for a 25-17 win.

In the second set, the Cardinals utilized a 6-0 run to turn a 7-7 score into a 13-7 advantage. After a service error by the Comets, Capital committed three straight attack errors before back to back aces off the right hand of Vitaz capped off the run. A second 6-0 run – this time to finish off the set – helped Otterbein win by a decisive 25-12 margin. Coupled with Capital attack errors, a block from Casper and Vitaz sealed the win.

Otterbein maintained the momentum throughout the third set, as an 18-15 lead grew into a 24-16 advantage. During the run by the Cardinals, Casper and Ashley Kefauver served aces.

As a team, Otterbein served 14 aces, tying their most in a match this season. Baum's 11 kills led the Cardinals, as a balanced attack and Comet miscues helped the hosts prevail. Defensively, Ganz led the way with 11 digs, while Vitaz's 23 assists was a game-high.

The Cardinals will play one final regular season contest at home on Friday night. Heidelberg visits The Rike Center for a 7 p.m. game, which will serve as the OAC regular season finale.
