No. 22 Marietta tops No. 15 Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In front of a packed house, the No. 15 Otterbein University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at the hands of No. 22 Marietta College. 

As a team, the Cardinals struggled offensively. Marietta totaled 28 blocks in the match, proving to be a tough task for the hosts. In a marathon first set, the Cardinals rallied from a 21-18 deficit, taking a 23-21 lead. Having chances to win throughout the final few points, it was Marietta who came away victorious in the first set 30-28.

Otterbein evened the match in the second set, highlighted by a 4-0 run that featured three kills from Lexi Scott. Scott finished with 14 on the evening, the second most on the squad. Otterbein maintained the momentum throughout the set before an Olvia Vitaz kill secured the win by a 25-17.

In the third set, Otterbein led 24-22, but the Pioneers stormed back to win 26-24. The story was all Marietta in the final set, earning the away win over the Cardinals. 

Sophomore Emerson Baum led the way with 15 kills. Chandler Crowell was the final Cardinal in double figures with 10 kills. Vitaz's 48 assists led the way. Five Otterbein players recorded double-digit digs in the match – Emma Steiger (16, career-high), Mackenzie Schellenberger (15), Ashley Kefauver (15), Grace Ganz (13) and Vitaz (11).

Otterbein heads to Baldwin Wallace on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest against the Yellow Jackets. The Cardinals will follow with a match against Albion College at 1 p.m.
