Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer ices Polar Bears, wins second straight OAC Tournament

The Cardinals defeated the Regular Season Champion, ONU, 0-0 (5-4 PKs) on the road Sunday.

ADA, Ohio – Ticket punched!

In thrilling fashion, the Otterbein University men's soccer team won its second straight OAC Tournament Championship, knocking off No. 24 Ohio Northern, 0-0 (5-4 PKs).

Freshman goalkeeper Jayden Burdine was terrific all afternoon, stopping a Polar Bear penalty kick in regulation and one in the shootout, notching seven total saves. The Cardinals connected on all five penalty kicks to advance to next week's NCAA Tournament in a game that featured the first snowfall of the season.

Otterbein's best scoring opportunity came midway through the first half, but the visitors were turned away by ONU's Carson Zurmehly. The Polar Bears' chances were limited in the first half, but Ohio Northern was awarded a penalty kick in the 49th minute. Burdine dove to his right to turn away ONU and keep the game locked at 0-0.

Burdine and the back third of Alex Greene, Nate Erre, Eli Traber and Jacob Irani continued to limit ONU's chances throughout regulation and overtime, sending the game to penalty kicks.

Ohio Northern – the Regular Season Champion – opted to kick first. The first ONU shot was denied by Burdine, lunging to his right and injecting life into the Otterbein bench. Drew Boettcher, Nick Isaac, Xavier Stocks and Irani all scored on their PKs, keeping a one goal advantage with the Cardinals as ONU netted their next three.

Down to the OAC Freshman of the Year, Lincoln Wallace, Wallace calmly buried the game-winning penalty kick in the fifth round, sending a flock of joyous Cardinals to the NCAA Tournament.

This marks the third OAC Tournament Championship under the leadership of head coach, Jason Griffiths. It will also be the third consecutive season the Cardinals have advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Otterbein will find out their opponent, location and time of their NCAA Tournament game when the NCAA Selection Show airs on Monday, Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m. on ncaa.com.
