Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball blows by Berg

WESTERVILLE – A pair of 18-point performances from Micah Germany and Julian Heckman put the Otterbein University men's basketball team back in the win column, knocking off Heidelberg University 71-60. The Cardinals improve to 6-2 overall with the win, 1-1 in the OAC.

Germany and Heckman were joined by Chase Garito and Dominic Theado, also scoring in double figures. Garito totaled 12 points while Theado added 10 and pulled down six rebounds. Germany was 4 for 8 from beyond the arc, while Heckman stuffed the stat sheet, contributing six boards, five assists and three steals.

The Berg jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before the Cardinals fired off nine straight points. Otterbein continued to build their advantage over the visitors, leading by as many as 12 in the opening half. A late flurry by Heidelberg cut the Cardinal lead to six, seeing Otterbein hold a 33-27 lead heading into halftime.

Heidelberg slowly chipped away at the Otterbein lead before a big corner three off the hand of Dominic Theado pushed the hosts ahead, 55-49 with 7:14 to play. The Berg answered with a triple of their own, but a Garito bucket followed by a layup from Germany vaulted the Cardinals' lead to seven. With 2:07 on the clock, another basket from Garito gave the Cardinals a nine point lead, going a perfect 6 for 6 down the stretch at the foul line.

Freshman Carter Piatt-Brown led Otterbein on the glass with eight rebounds, all coming on the defensive end. Otterbein shot 47.5 percent from the floor, compared to Heidelberg's 30.8 percent mark.

The Cardinals will continue OAC action on Tuesday when they welcome Marietta College to the Rike Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
