Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Otterbein knocks off RV Washington & Jefferson to open Smokey Ballenger Classic

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A complete team effort paced the Otterbein University women's basketball team in a 52-43 victory over RV Washington & Jefferson College. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 8-3 overall.

Junior guard Abby Rawlings led the way with 15 points on a 5 of 11 shooting effort. Kiara Hudgins added 12 points, highlighted by some fourth quarter heroics, earning her Player of the Game honors. Cameron Sparks had a massive day on the glass, pulling down a career-best 19 rebounds, 11 on the offensive boards.

Trailing 8-3 in the early goings, Otterbein rallied to end the first quarter on a 9-2 run. Anna Waskiewicz collected her first of three steals, leading to a Rawlings transition bucket. In the final minute, the Cardinals received triples from Rawlings and Kyla Irby to hold a 12-10 lead after one. W&J took a 24-21 lead with 3:28 before the half, but Otterbein went on a 6-0 run to close out the period for a halftime advantage. Four of Otterbein's six points came from Rawlings in that stretch.

The two teams traded blows throughout the third quarter, with a basket in the final seconds from W&J to give the Presidents a 33-32 edge heading into the fourth. Down by two with under five minutes to play, Mattie Walburn hit a baseline jumper to knot the game at 40. Getting a stop at the other end, the hosts took the lead for good when Hudgins drained a stepback three as the shot clock expired for a 43-40 lead.

After another stop defensively, Hudgins hit a jumper in the paint to extend the lead to five. The Cardinals would use that as part of a 13-0 run to keep the Presidents at bay and earn the victory.

Aided by the sharp-shooting of Rawlings and Hudgins, Sparks led the way with four assists while contributing seven points.

Tomorrow, the Cardinals will host Mount Aloysius on the final day of the Smokey Ballenger Classic. Tip off against the Mounties is scheduled for noon.
