Baseball closes season-opening 3-game set at Sewanee (Tenn.)

SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Otterbein baseball team wrapped up its season-opening three-game series at Sewanee (Tenn.) on Sunday with a 7-2 defeat.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (0-3 overall), Sewanee (7-0 overall)
  • Venue: Montgomery Field - Sewanee, Tenn.
Otterbein Stat Leaders
  • Senior Logan Ullom led the Cardinals with two hits, both of which were singles.
  • Graduate student Jamie Perebzak, senior Max McCann, sophomores Stevie Monokandilos and Nolan James and freshman Calvin Mabry each recorded a hit.
  • James had the team's only double.
  • Senior Bryson Bell started on the mound for the Cardinals, giving up two earned runs on four hits and three walks over four innings of work.
  • Senior Noah Gruver pitched two innings to close, allowing no runs or hits, with one walk and one strikeout. 
Game Highlights
  • Bottom Second: Sewanee got on the board in the second inning, starting with a sacrifice bunt to reach base. The runner then stole second and came around to score on a single through the left side, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
  • Top Third: Monokandilos singled through the left side and stole second to reach scoring position but was stranded on base.
  • Bottom Third: The Tigers extended their lead after a leadoff walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. A double down the right-field line then brought in the run, making it 2-0.
  • Top Fourth: Ullom kickstarted the inning with a single to right-center and was moved to second after senior Zac Taylor drew a walk, but both were left stranded on base.
  • Bottom Five: Sewanee rallied to add three more runs, starting with a walk, followed by a single through the left side and another single to load the bases. The first run scored on a wild pitch, advancing the runners to third and second, making it 3-0. A subsequent single to left-center brought both runners home, putting the Tigers up 5-0.
  • Top Six: Otterbein put two runs on the board, beginning with a single to left field by Perebzak. Ullom followed with a single to right field, and freshman JT Gels loaded the bases with a walk. Senior Zac Taylor drove in a run with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Perebzak. Senior Jake Brown then added another sacrifice fly to center, bringing Ullom home and making the score 5-2.
  • Bottom Six: The Tigers hit a two-run homer to extend their lead to 7-2.
  • Top Eight: James pinch-hit and doubled to center field with two outs but was left stranded on base.
  • Top Nine: McCann hit a two-out single and advanced to second on a Sewanee error that allowed Perebzak to reach base. Ullom then drew a walk to load the bases before the Tigers induced the game-ending out.
  • Sewanee out-hit Otterbein 9-7, and the Tigers committed three errors to none for the Cardinals.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak ranks ninth all-time at Otterbein in hits (192), fifth in doubles (42), 11th in home runs (20) and third in RBIs (167).
  • Ullom has 76 hits in 101 career games at Otterbein.
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 608-423-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
