Baseball splits doubleheader with Calvin (Mich.) in Lancaster

LANCASTER — The Otterbein baseball team split a doubleheader against Calvin (Mich.) on Friday at Beavers Field in Lancaster. The Cardinals rebounded to win the second game 10-5 after falling 5-3 in the opener.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (1-4 overall), Calvin (1-1 overall)
  • Venue: Beavers Field - Lancaster, Ohio
  • The games were played at Beavers Field due to unplayable field conditions at Otterbein, and the final game of the three-game series set for Saturday has been canceled.
Otterbein Stat Leaders - Game 1
  • Graduate student Jamie Perebzak led the Otterbein offense with three hits, including a double, and added an RBI.
  • Seniors Logan Ullom, Jake Brown and Charlie Greenlief tallied one double each in the game. Ullom added an RBI.
  • Senior Zac Taylor tallied a single and RBI.
  • Senior Max McCann and sophomore Stevie Monokandilos had one single each.
  • Sophomore Grady Kehr got the pitching start for the Cardinals and allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven over five innings.
  • Sophomore Brady Heagen pitched two relief innings and tallied four strikeouts.
Game 1 - Calvin 5, Otterbein 3
  • TOP ONE: The Knights put their first run on the board in the opening inning, starting with a leadoff single. A wild pitch advanced the runner, who then stole third before Calvin drove him home with an RBI single.
  • TOP FIVE: Calvin added another run after reaching on a single and advancing on a wild pitch. A double to left-center brought him home, extending the lead to 2-0.
  • TOP SIX: The Knights added two more runs, beginning with a walk. The runner advanced on a base hit before a double drove him home. Another single then brought the runner in scoring position across the plate, extending the lead to 4-0.
  • TOP SEVEN: Calvin added a fifth run with runners on the corners after a double and a single. As the runner on first stole second, the runner on third took advantage of the throw and scored, making it 5-0.
  • BOTTOM EIGHT: Otterbein put three runs on the board, sparked by a double from Greenlief. Perebzak followed with a double of his own to bring Greenlief home. Ullom kept the momentum going with another double, scoring Perebzak and cutting the deficit to 5-2. Senior Taylor then delivered a clutch single up the middle, bringing Ullom home and making it a 5-3 game.
  • Both teams finished with nine hits. Otterbein committed one error to none for Calvin.
Otterbein Stat Leaders - Game 2
  • Greenlief led the Otterbein offense with two hits, both doubles, to go with three RBIs and one run.
  • Ullom tallied two hits, including a double, with two RBIs and two runs.
  • Freshman JT Gels had two hits and two RBIs.
  • McCann added two hits, including a double, and two runs.
  • Taylor posted one hit, one RBI and two runs.
  • Monokandilos recorded a double and a run.
  • Junior Luke Walter got the pitching start for the Cardinals and allowed one earned run on seven hits and four walks while striking out five over five innings.
Game 2 - Otterbein 10, Calvin 5
  • BOTTOM ONE: The Cardinals put five runs on the board in the first inning, all with no outs. McCann drew a leadoff walk, and Perebzak and Ullom loaded the bases with back-to-back singles. Greenlief followed with a bases-clearing double to put Otterbein up 3-0. Greenlief later advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Taylor. After Taylor advanced to second on a passed ball, he came home on a single from Gels.
  • BOTTOM TWO: After Calvin scored a run in the top of the frame, Otterbein added four to its tally in the bottom portion. Ullom hit a 2-RBI double to left-center, scoring Perebzak and McCann, and later scored on a passed ball. Gels made it a 9-1 Cardinal lead with an RBI single that scored Taylor.
  • TOP SEVEN: After Calvin plated a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings, the Knights added two more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 9-5. They loaded the bases with three consecutive singles to start the frame. One run scored via a fielder's choice and the other came home on a sac fly.
  • BOTTOM SEVEN: Otterbein capped the scoring in the seventh following a leadoff double from Monokandilos. He later advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch, making it a 10-5 lead.
  • TOP NINE: Calvin loaded the bases with two outs, but pitcher junior Andrew Nemec induced a popout to end the game.
  • Both teams tallied 12 hits and two errors in the game.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak ranks ninth all-time at Otterbein in hits (196), tied for fourth in doubles (43), 11th in home runs (20) and third in RBIs (168).
  • Ullom has 79 hits in 103 career games at Otterbein.
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 609-424-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
