Softball splits with Catholic (D.C.), DeSales (Pa.) on second day of The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Otterbein softball team continued its spring break schedule Monday with a doubleheader split against Catholic (D.C.) and DeSales (Pa.) as part of The Spring Games. The Cardinals opened with a 5-1 win over Catholic and closed the day with a 12-3 defeat to DeSales.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (2-2 overall), Catholic (6-1 overall), DeSales (1-2 overall)
  • Venue: Hancock Park - Clermont, Fla.
Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. Catholic
  • Sophomore Maggie McVicker had a strong showing in the pitching circle. She allowed just one unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out five in a complete-game outing.
  • Senior Jen Sindledecker led the Otterbein offense with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs.
  • Junior Emma Calkins also tallied two hits.
  • Sophomore Kennedi Endsley and junior Caitlin Wilkins posted matching stat lines of one hit and two runs. Wilkins added a stolen base.
  • Graduate student Caroline Heller finished with one hit, one RBI and one run.
Game 1 - Otterbein 5, Catholic 1
  • Otterbein got on the board in the bottom of the first inning via an RBI double from Sindledecker, who added an RBI single in the bottom of the third to make it a 2-0 lead.
  • Otterbein plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-0 lead. Endsley and Wilkins reached base on back-to-back Catholic errors. With runners on second and third, Heller hit an RBI single to score the first run of the frame. Later with the bases loaded, Sindledecker added an RBI sac fly. Yet another Catholic error, the fourth of the inning, reloaded the bases, and McVicker hit an RBI sac fly.
  • Catholic capped the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning.
  • Otterbein out-hit Catholic by a 7-3 margin. Otterbein committed one error to Catholic's four.
Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. DeSales
  • Freshman Bri Dowell led the Otterbein offense with two hits, including a double, and one RBI.
  • Junior Rachel Miller tallied a double and two runs.
  • Heller, Sindledecker, senior Isa Lewis and freshman Amber Bradbury finished with one hit each. Heller's hit was a double, and Bradbury added an RBI.
  • Freshman Evie Lehman got the pitching start for the Cardinals and recorded three strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
Game 2 - DeSales 12, Otterbein 3
  • Otterbein scored the first run of the game, getting an RBI single from Bradbury in the top of the second inning.
  • DeSales answered with two runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the third for a 5-1 edge.
  • An RBI double from Dowell in the top of the fourth inning got Otterbein within three, 5-2, but DeSales padded its lead with a three-run fifth frame.
  • The Cardinals scored their final run of the game on an RBI single from Sindledecker in the top of the sixth.
  • DeSales capped the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • DeSales out-hit Otterbein by a 16-7 margin. Both teams were error-free.
