Baseball splits doubleheader with Wisconsin-Lutheran, Skidmore (N.Y.)

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Otterbein baseball team split a doubleheader with Wisconsin-Lutheran and Skidmore (N.Y.) on Friday in games six and seven of a nine-game spring break slate in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Cardinals opened with an 11-4 victory over Wisconsin-Lutheran and closed the day with a 15-5 loss to Skidmore.

  • Sophomore Stevie Monokandilos tallied three hits, one RBI, two runs and one steal.
  • Senior Logan Ullom posted three hits, including a double, to go with one RBI and one run.
  • Freshman Calvin Mabry finished with two hits, two RBIs, two runs and three steals.
  • Senior Charlie Greenlief added two hits, including a double, to go with two RBIs, two runs, one walk and two steals.
  • Sophomore Nolan James tallied two hits, one RBI, two runs and one steal.
  • Graduate student Jamie Perebzak posted a double, one RBI, two runs and one walk.
  • Freshman Austin Payne earned the win on the mound in relief of freshman starter Maverick Rabe. Payne pitched five scoreless innings, giving up six hits and no walks while adding one strikeout.
Game 1 - Otterbein 11, Wisconsin-Lutheran 4
  • The Warriors got out to a hot start with four runs in the top of the first inning but were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Cardinals responded with a run on an RBI single from Ullom in the bottom of the frame.
  • Otterbein added a run in each of the second and third innings to get within one, 4-3. Mabry had an RBI groundout in the second, and senior Zac Taylor added an RBI double in the third.
  • The Cardinals took a 5-4 edge in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI sac fly from senior Max McCann and RBI double from Perebzak.
  • The success on offense continued for Otterbein in the bottom of the fifth. The Cardinals extended their lead to 9-4 via RBI singles from James, Monokandilos and Mabry, who later stole third base and scored on a WLC error.
  • The Cardinals padded their lead in the sixth, getting a 2-RBI double from Greenlief for an 11-4 edge en route to the victory.
  • Otterbein out-hit WLC by a 15-11 margin. Otterbein committed one error to WLC's two.
Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. Skidmore
  • James tallied a home run with three RBIs and one run.
  • Freshman Daniel Uhl finished with a triple, one RBI and one run.
  • Greenlief hit a double.
  • Freshman Jameson Olesen got the pitching start for Otterbein and threw 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk while adding two strikeouts.
Game 2 - Skidmore 15, Otterbein 5
  • After a scoreless first four innings, Skidmore took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the frame, Uhl tied the score with a two-out RBI triple and put the Cardinals up 2-1 when he came home on a Skidmore error that allowed McCann to reach base.
  • Skidmore tied the score at 2-2 via an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning.
  • The Thoroughbreds took a 15-2 lead with 13 runs in the top of the eighth inning.
  • Otterbein capped the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run homer from James.
  • Skidmore out-hit Otterbein by a 15-6 margin. Otterbein committed one error to Skidmore's four.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak is tied for seventh all-time at Otterbein in hits (207) and ranks fourth in doubles (47), 11th in home runs (20) and third in RBIs (173).
  • Ullom has 93 hits, 24 doubles and 44 RBIs in his Otterbein career. He has a team-high 21 hits and eight doubles this season. He has hit safely in 11 of the 13 games this season, including seven multi-hit games.
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 614-427-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
