FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Otterbein baseball team built an early 5-0 lead and held on for a 5-4 victory over Dean (Mass.) on Saturday in its penultimate spring break game in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. Junior
Luke Walter gave the Cardinals a solid start on the mound, and senior
Noah Gruver closed the door on any late Bulldog comeback.

Otterbein Stat Leaders
- Senior Max McCann tallied two hits and one RBI.

Game Highlights
- Otterbein scored a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out on walks to Perebzak and senior Charlie Greenlief sandwiching a single from Ullom. Senior Zac Taylor followed by driving in a run on a fielder's choice.
- The Cardinals increased their lead to 5-0 in the top of the second frame after a leadoff double from Brown. A walk to sophomore Stevie Monokandilos and a single from Mabry loaded the bases, and McCann added a one-out RBI single. With the bases still loaded, Perebzak plated Monokandilos on a fielder's choice, and Mabry also scored courtesy of a Bulldog error.
- Neither team scored over the next three innings, but Dean began its comeback in the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh frames and added two more in the eighth to get back within one, 5-4.
- Senior Robby Kain took the mound for the Cardinals with one out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth and proceeded to induce consecutive flyouts that allowed Otterbein to maintain the lead.
- Ullom singled and stole second base in the top of the ninth but was left stranded. Gruver took the mound in the bottom of the frame with the one-run lead and proceeded to shut down the opposing hitters, ending the game with three straight strikeouts on 16 pitches.
- Both teams tallied six hits in the game. Otterbein committed one error to Dean's two.
Notables
- The Cardinals are 5-3 during their spring break trip this year with one more game, against Eastern Connecticut State on Sunday, to play.
- Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak is tied for seventh all-time at Otterbein in hits (207) and ranks fourth in doubles (47), 11th in home runs (20) and third in RBIs (174).
- Ullom has 95 hits, 24 doubles and 44 RBIs in his Otterbein career. He has a team-high 23 hits and eight doubles this season. He has hit safely in 12 of the 14 games this season, including eight multi-hit games.
- Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 615-427-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
