Baseball opens OAC schedule with losses to John Carroll

WESTERVILLE — The Otterbein baseball team opened its Ohio Athletic Conference schedule with losses of 16-8 and 16-6 in a doubleheader against John Carroll on Saturday. Graduate student Jamie Perebzak led the way for Otterbein with a pair of home runs, and senior Jake Brown, freshman Daniel Uhl and graduate student Caden Kirker went deep for the Cardinals as well.

  • Uhl led the Cardinals with two hits, including a double and home run, to go with four RBIs and one run.
  • Senior Max McCann posted two hits, one RBI and one run.
  • Perebzak had a home run with two RBIs and one run.
  • Brown added a home run with one RBI and one run.
  • Senior Logan Ullom had two hits.

  • JCU scored four runs in each of the first two innings and two more in the fourth for an early 10-0 lead.
  • Otterbein plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth via an RBI single from McCann and two-run homer from Perebzak.
  • After the Blue Streaks scored two runs in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals scored three on a 3-RBI double from Uhl in the bottom of the frame, making the score 12-6.
  • JCU added four runs in the top of the eighth, increasing its lead to 16-6.
  • Otterbein capped the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on solo homers from Brown and Uhl.
  • JCU out-hit Otterbein by a 17-8 margin. Otterbein committed three errors to John Carroll's one.

  • JCU built a 7-1 lead through four innings. Otterbein's lone run came on an RBI fielder's choice from Uhl in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Cardinals added another run in the fifth on an RBI single from James, making the score 7-2.
  • The Blue Streaks plated a run in the sixth and five more in the seventh for a 13-2 lead.
  • Perebzak hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, making the score 13-5.
  • After JCU scored three runs in the top of the ninth, Otterbein capped the scoring with a solo homer from Kirker in the bottom of the frame.
  • Both teams posted nine hits in the game. Otterbein committed five errors to John Carroll's seven.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak is tied for fourth all-time at Otterbein in hits (212), is tied for third in doubles (47), is tied for ninth in home runs (22) and ranks second in RBIs (180). Jim Allen (1986-89) is the program's all-time leader in RBIs with 189.
  • Ullom has 103 hits, 24 doubles and 46 RBIs in his Otterbein career. He has a team-high 31 hits and eight doubles this season.
  • Taylor has a team-high 18 RBIs on the season.
  • Uhl's home run was the third of his career. The home runs from Brown and Kirker were the first of their careers.
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 617-430-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is seven wins away from tying Dick Fishbaugh (624) for most coaching wins in program history and fifth all-time in OAC history. Powell is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
