Men's Lacrosse reclaims Oar with 15-11 victory at Capital

COLUMBUS — After dropping each of its past two regular-season meetings with Capital, the Otterbein men's lacrosse team opened its Ohio Athletic Conference schedule with a 15-11 win over the Comets on Saturday to reclaim the Oar trophy.

  • First Quarter: Otterbein took an early 3-1 lead, getting goals from Rainone, Dean and Mulligan. Rainone's goal opened the scoring and was assisted by Nathan Lewis. Capital capped the first-quarter scoring with a goal with 2:30 left, cutting its deficit to 3-2 going into the second period.
  • Second Quarter: The Comets tied the score with 13:15 left but were held scoreless for the remainder of the period as Otterbein scored four unanswered goals to take a 7-3 edge into halftime. Wright, Mulligan, Graham and Nathan Lewis all found the back of the net in that span. Senior Anthony Flores assisted Wright's goal, and while Graham had the assist on the Mulligan goal, and Regruth assisted Graham's goal.
  • Third Quarter: The Cardinals added two more goals, one each from Dean and Nathan Lewis, to open the second half, taking a 9-3 lead with 12:40 left. After a pair of Capital goals, the Cardinals capped the period with five unanswered goals to take a 14-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Regruth started that spurt with goal on an assist from Dean. After a score from Mulligan, Wright found the back of the net on an assist from Andrew Lewis. Following a goal from Rainone, Andrew Lewis scored on an assist from Regruth.
  • Fourth Quarter: Otterbein extended its lead to 15-5 with a goal from Regruth on an assist from Nathan Lewis just 48 seconds into the final period. The Cardinals then held on for the victory, as Capital ended the game with six unanswered goals, the last of which got the Comets within four, 15-11, with 3:07 remaining.
  • Key Team Stats: Capital out-shot Otterbein by a 46-44 margin, and the Comets finished with a 48-40 edge in ground balls. Capital won 19 of the 30 faceoffs. Otterbein committed 28 turnovers to 26 for Capital.
