Softball splits with Washington & Jefferson (Pa.), Western New England (Mass.) to open season

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Otterbein softball team opened its 2025 season and spring break schedule with a doubleheader split against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) and Western New England (Mass.) as part of The Spring Games on Sunday.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (1-1 overall), Washington & Jefferson (1-2 overall), Western New England (3-1 overall)
  • Venue: Fortune Road Athletic Complex - Kissimmee, Fla.
Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. Washington & Jefferson
  • Graduate student Caroline Heller led the offense with two hits, including a double, and one RBI.
  • Juniors Caitlin Wilkins and Rachel Miller posted matching stat lines of one hit, one RBI and one run. Miller's hit was a triple, while Wilkins' hit was a double.
  • Sophomore Kennedi Endsley recorded one hit, two walks and one run.
  • Junior Emma Calkins and sophomore Maggie McVicker each tallied one hit and one RBI. McVikcer's hit was a double.
  • Freshman Evie Lehman got the pitching start for Otterbein and threw 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just four hits while recording five strikeouts.
  • Junior Kiley King earned the win in relief after pitching 1.2 scoreless frames, allowing no base-runners.
Game 1 - Otterbein 6, Washington & Jefferson 0
  • Neither team was able to score through six innings. The Cardinals did advance a runner to third base in each of the fourth and fifth frames but were unable to score.
  • Otterbein broke through in a big way in the top of the seventh, scoring all six runs after senior Isa Lewis drew a leadoff walk.
  • Miller followed with an RBI triple and later scored on a one-out sac fly from junior Lexi Hart. The next batter, Endsley, walked and stole second base before scoring on a double from Wilkins.
  • Heller followed with an RBI double of her own, putting the Cardinals up 4-0. Calkins added an RBI single and proceeded to score on a double from McVicker for the 6-0 lead before the Presidents were able to end the frame.
  • King proceeded to secure the victory for the Cardinals with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.
  • Otterbein out-hit W&J by a 7-4 margin. The Cardinals committed no errors to the Presidents' one.
Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. Western New England
  • Endsley led the Otterbein offense with two hits and a stolen base.
  • Miller tallied one hit and one RBI.
  • Wilkins and McVicker posted matching stat lines of one hit and one run each.
  • Addison Yoder got the pitching start for the Cardinals and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and five walks while recording three strikeouts over six innings. King pitched one inning in relief.
Game 2 - Western New England 3, Otterbein 2
  • The Golden Bears opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third inning courtesy of a passed ball.
  • Western New England made it a 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Otterbein had a quick response, however, plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth to get back within one. Wilkins hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a passed ball. Following a walk to McVicker, Wilkins scored on a sac fly from freshman Ciana D'Antoni. The next batter, Miller, added an RBI single that plated McVicker, making the score 3-2.
  • Still trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, senior Chloe Clark drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single from Endsley. Endsley stole second base, putting both runners in scoring position, but the Golden Bears were able to end the game via two consecutive popouts.
  • Both teams tallied seven hits in the game. Otterbein committed one error to Western New England's none.

  • Lewis has 81 hits and 46 RBIs in her Otterbein career.
  • Miller has 51 career hits in her Otterbein career.
  • Named the OAC Rookie of the Year in 2024, Endsley has 47 career hits.
  • Head coach Bruce Anderson is in his fourth year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 54-53-1 at the helm of the Cardinals.
