Greenlief hits grand slam, tallies 5 RBIs as Baseball falls at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD — Senior Charlie Greenlief hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs to lead the Otterbein baseball team in a 12-11 loss at Wittenberg on Wednesday evening.

  • Greenlief's grand slam home run was part of a three-hit game to go with five RBIs and one run.

Game Highlights
  • The Otterbein offense got hot early with five runs in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs after Taylor drew a leadoff walk, Perebzak was hit by a pitch and Ullom singled. James was hit by a pitch to drive in a run, and Greenlief followed with a grand slam for the 5-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the second for an 8-0 lead. Mabry and Taylor opened with back-to-back singles and advanced to second and third with one out on a double steal. Ullom drove them both home with a 2-RBI single, and James added a double to put runners on second and third. Ullom scored on a groundout from Greenlief.
  • Wittenberg scored two runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth to cut the deficit to 8-5. That stretch was highlighted by a three-run homer with no outs in the fourth.
  • Otterbein extended its lead to 9-5 with an RBI single from Mabry in the sixth.
  • The Tigers scored four runs with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score and proceeded to add two more for an 11-9 lead.
  • After Taylor drew a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth, Perebzak tied the score at 11-11 with a two-run homer. Ullom then reached on a Tiger error, and Greenlief put runners on first and third with a one-out single. But the Cardinals were unable to take the lead.
  • Wittenberg got a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth, and the runner advanced to third on a passed ball. After a pair of intentional walks loaded the bases, and the Tigers scored the winning run on a sac fly.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Otterbein by a 15-11 margin. Each team committed one error.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak ranks third all-time at Otterbein in hits (220), is tied for third in doubles (47), ranks eighth in home runs (24) and second in RBIs (187). Jim Allen (1986-89) is the program's all-time leader in RBIs with 189.
  • Ullom has 110 hits, 26 doubles and 51 RBIs in his Otterbein career.
  • Entering Wednesday, Ullom ranked second in the OAC in hits (36) and was tied for the conference lead in doubles (10) on the season.
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 620-433-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is four wins away from tying Dick Fishbaugh (624) for most coaching wins in program history and fifth all-time in OAC history. Powell is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
  • Otterbein is 7-5 against Wittenberg dating back to 2009. Wednesday's loss ended a six-game win streak against the Tigers.
