Baseball drops OAC doubleheader to Mount Union

WESTERVILLE — The Otterbein baseball team tallied a combined 17 hits but dropped both games of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Mount Union on Monday. The Purple Raiders won 8-2 in the opener and closed out the day with a 19-8 victory.

  • Records: Otterbein (12-15 overall, 2-6 OAC), Mount Union (15-6 overall, 8-0 OAC)

  • Mount Union opened up a 5-0 lead with one run in the second inning, two in the third and two in the fifth.
  • The Purple Raiders added a run in the top of the sixth before Otterbein got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Ullom drew a leadoff walk, and Greenlief added a one-out single. Mabry added a two-out RBI single, making the score 6-1.
  • After a scoreless seventh inning, each team plated a run in the eighth. Otterbein's run came after loading the bases with no outs via an Ullom single, walk to sophomore Nolan James and single from Greenlief. Ullom scored as freshman JT Gels grounded into a double play.
  • Mount Union added a run in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring.
  • Mount Union out-hit Otterbein by a 13-9 margin. Otterbein committed three errors to Mount Union's none.

  • Trailing 4-0, the Cardinals plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Perebzak.
  • After Mount Union added three more runs in the top of the third, Otterbein got an RBI single from Gels to close the gap to 7-3.
  • The Purple Raiders added four runs in the fourth and one more in the top of the fifth for a 12-3 lead.
  • The Cardinals got within 12-7 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, which was highlighted by RBI singles from Greenlief and Mabry.
  • Mount Union plated three runs in the top of the sixth for a 15-7 edge.
  • After Otterbein added a run on an RBI single from Greenlief in the bottom of the eighth, Mount Union capped the scoring with four runs in the top of the ninth. 
  • Mount Union out-hit Otterbein by a 22-8 margin. Otterbein committed four errors to Mount Union's five.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak ranks third all-time at Otterbein in hits (222), is tied for third in doubles (47), ranks eighth in home runs (24) and second in RBIs (188). Jim Allen (1986-89) is the program's all-time leader in RBIs with 189.
  • Ullom has 113 hits, 26 doubles and 51 RBIs in his Otterbein career.
  • Entering Monday, Ullom ranked second in the OAC in hits (38) and was tied for second in doubles (10) on the season. Perebzak was tied for second in the OAC in home runs (4) and ranked eighth in runs (25), and Greenlief was tied for eighth in RBIs (22).
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 620-435-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is four wins away from tying Dick Fishbaugh (624) for most coaching wins in program history and fifth all-time in OAC history. Powell is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
  • Mount Union is 23-16 against Otterbein dating back to 2009.
