Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

RV Volleyball caps off perfect weekend

The Cardinals took down two NCAA Qualifying teams from a season ago to go 4-0.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The marquee matchups of the weekend did not disappoint, as the Otterbein University volleyball team swept a pair of opponents receiving votes in the AVCA National Poll to close out the weekend. Otterbein valiantly knocked off Carnegie Mellon 3-2 before ending the day with a 3-1 win over Gettysburg. Similar to Otterbein, both CMU and Gettysburg were NCAA Tournament participants a season ago.

Sophomore Emerson Baum was terrific on the day, slamming 35 kills throughout the two matches.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 3 Carnegie Mellon 2

The Cardinals used a dominant final two sets to secure the victory over the Tartans. Junior outside Lexi Scott's 16 kills paced Otterbein, while Baum recorded 15.

CMU scored the final four points of the first set to win the opener. With the two teams knotted at eight in the second set, Otterbein fired off an 8-1 run to create distance and take a 16-9 lead over the Tartans. In that run, the Cardinals received three kills from Scott and a pair from Baum. Fittingly enough, Scott tied the match at one set apiece with a kill to win set two, 25-18.

As the Tartans captured the third set, Otterbein looked to send the match to a decisive fifth set. CMU regained the lead and made a late push, but the Cardinals finished the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-19. Freshman Payton Powell served up an ace, while seniors Brooke Barb and Maddie Mergen tacked on kills.

Holding a 4-3 advantage in the fifth, Otterbein used two Scott kills and a block to swing the momentum into their favor and take an 8-3 lead. Continuing to fend off the Tartans, a kill by Barb lifted the Cardinals over a tough national opponent.

Olivia Vitaz was tremendous in a 38 assist effort. The senior also collected 11 digs and had five assisted blocks in the win. Junior Ashley Kefauver led the Cardinals with 22 digs. In addition to Vitaz's 11, Grace Ganz was the other Otterbein player to total double-digit digs, adding 13.

Otterbein limited the Tartans' offensive chances, as CMU hit just .128 in the match.

GAME TWO: Otterbein 3 Gettysburg 1

In another matchup against a quality opponent, the Cardinals used a spectacular offensive performance to knock off the host Bullets.

Utilizing a 9-2 run in the first set, Otterbein claimed a 19-10 lead over the Bullets to build a cushion in the set one victory. Baum dazzled in that stretch, racking up three kills and one assisted block. The Cardinals were able to fend off a late Gettysburg run to win 25-22. A push by the Cardinals in the late points came up short in the second set, as an early Bullets lead proved to be too much for the Cardinals. Falling 25-23, Otterbein righted the ship in the third set by cruising to a 25-10 win.

Turning in a marvelous hitting set (.458, 14 kills), Otterbein closed out the set on a 17-3 scoring run. With Baum and Barb doing most of the damage – both with kills and blocks – the Cardinals put themselves within a set of going undefeated on the weekend. Keeping the momentum throughout the fourth set, Otterbein once again made quick work of the hosts with a 25-16 triumph.

Baum's 20 kills marked a career-high. She attacked at a .531 percentage on 32 swings, committing just three errors. Defensively, Baum totaled eight assisted blocks. Scott ended with 14 kills, hitting .400 and Mergen registered 11 for the Cardinals. Vitaz finished with 48 assists – one shy of tying a career-best.

Otterbein will host part of the annual Pam Briggs Classic on Friday with a pair of games against Centre and Stevenson. The Cardinals will play Centre at 3 p.m. followed by Stevenson at 7 p.m., with the Mustangs and the Colonels meeting in the 5 p.m. contest.
