Vitaz hits 2,000 career assists, No. 25 VB rolls to two wins

WESTERVILLE – Olivia Vitaz's 2,000th career assist and two three-set wins paced the No. 25 Otterbein University volleyball team in its 2025 home opener. Improving to 6-0 on the young season, the Cardinals are off to their best start since 2022.

GAME ONE: No. 25 Otterbein 3 Centre 0

Utilizing a 9-0 run in the first set, the Cardinals cruised to the opening set victory. Otterbein was stellar with Makenzie Schellenberger back to serve, as the junior posted a team-best three aces. Otterbein scored the final four points of the set, as Chandler Crowell's kill ended the set with a 25-13 win for the hosts. Crowell finished with seven kills in the match.

In the second set, Otterbein went on a 5-0 run to distance themselves from the Colonels, taking a 15-11 lead and swinging it to a 19-11 advantage. Holding a comfortable lead for the remainder of the set, Otterbein took the middle set by  a 25-15 margin.

Centre came back with a vengeance in the third, nearly forcing a fourth set. A large lead slipped away from the Cardinals, as Centre rattled off a 9-0 run to take a 23-22 lead. As Centre held a 25-24 lead, Otterbein regained composure to score the final three points and complete the sweep. Two kills from Brooke Barb were followed by a block by Emerson Baum and Vitaz to win 27-25.

As a team, the Cardinals swung at a .311 clip compared to .131 by the visitors. Lexi Scott's 10 kills paced the hosts, as Barb and Baum tacked on nine, and Maddie Mergen finished with eight and a .438 hitting percentage. Baum's six total blocks were a team-high, as Vitaz totaled five.

GAME TWO: No. 25 Otterbein 3 Stevenson 0

Serving up 13 aces as a team, the Cardinals made quick work of Stevenson. The Mustangs committed 20 attack errors, hitting at a .021 mark, seeing Otterbein win in straight sets. Scott, Baum and Lauren Neisel led the way, all registering six kills.

Vitaz reached the 2,000 career assist mark in the third set, finishing with 25 in the match. Schellenberger and Ashley Kefauver led Otterbein with seven digs each.
