Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 25 volleyball sweeps Allegheny, remains unbeaten

WESTERVILLE – A dazzling start doesn't even begin to cut it.

Winning their seventh straight contest and third in straight sets, the No. 25 Otterbein University volleyball team made quick work of Allegheny College in the final game of the Pam Briggs Classic. The Cardinals won 25-15, 25-22 and 25-15 while hitting at a .345 clip for the match.

Reigning OAC Offensive Player of the Week Emerson Baum was remarkable, flooring 14 kills and hitting at a .619 mark. The sophomore's 14 kills were a team-high, as senior Maddie Mergen contributed nine kills in the win.

In the first set, the Cardinals put together an early 5-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. A few points later, Otterbein added to the advantage by scoring four straight points, including two kills by Chander Crowell for a commanding 15-5 lead. After taking the first set by a 10-point win, the Gators closed the gap in set two. Holding onto a slim lead, Mergen put the Cardinals up two sets to none with a kill to end the Allegheny threat.

Similar to the first set, the momentum was in complete favor of the hosts for the final set. A 5-0 run featuring three Lexi Scott kills helped the hosts bolster their lead to 16-5. Lauren Neisel's kill ended the match in triumphant fashion, leading the Cardinals to their seventh straight win.

Roughly 14 hours after recording her 2,000th career assist, Olivia Vitaz added 23 to her career total. The senior led all players in assists. Ashley Kefauver's eight digs paced the defense, as classmate Makenzie Schellenberger added seven.

Otterbein hits the road next weekend to play three games at the Hanover Invitational. The weekend kicks off on Friday against Trine University. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
