Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Eight straight: No. 19 volleyball wins eighth consecutive game

HANOVER, Ind. – Winners of eight straight contests, the No. 19 Otterbein University volleyball team swept Trine University in game one of the Hanover Invitational. Now on a 14-set win streak, the Cardinals are off to their best start since the 2022 season.

After winning the first two sets by tight 25-21 and 25-23 margins, the Cardinals dominated the final set in 25-14 fashion. Otterbein's offense was paced by Emerson Baum's nine kills and eight from senior Maddie Mergen.

Otterbein jumped out to a big lead in the opening set, but the Thunder responded to trim the deficit to one. Never able to tie the Cardinals, Trine set Otterbein up for set point with a service error. A big-time block from Mergen and Chandler Crowell sealed the win, helping the Cardinals hold a 1-0 advantage.

After the Thunder claimed a 15-12 lead in the second set, the Cardinals utilized a 5-0 run to regain the lead. Trine had an immediate answer to knot the game up at 17, but a Lexi Scott kill sent the momentum right back in Otterbein's favor to ignite a 3-0 rally. Scott finished with seven kills in the win. Late in the set, the Cardinals were clinging to a 24-23 lead until Mergen stepped up and ended the set with a kill.

An 8-0 run early in the final set would help to secure the sweep for the nationally-ranked Cardinals. Aided by a pair of aces from Makenzie Schellenberger, Otterbein cruised to finish off Trine. The junior ended the match with a game-best four aces, one shy of a career-high.

Schellenberger (10 digs) and Ashley Kefauver (15 digs) held down the back row, while Olivia Vitaz's 22 assists were a game-high.

Tomorrow, Otterbein closes out the Hanover Invitational with matches against Depauw and the host Panthers. The Cardinals will square off against Depauw at noon followed by Hanover at 2 p.m.
