Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Otterbein University women's soccer team closed out action at the 2025 Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament on Sunday afternoon, dropping a hard-fought 1-0 decision to No. 8-ranked Messiah University. The result leaves the Cardinals with a 1-1 record on the weekend.
Neither side was able to break through in the opening half, as the defenses held strong. Senior goalkeeper Ella Schwertfager tallied one save on the lone shot on target she faced, keeping the contest scoreless at the the break.
Otterbein nearly struck early in the second half when sophomore Olivia Brooks ripped a shot in the 48th minute, but her attempt sailed just left of the frame. Messiah responded with increased pressure and ultimately broke the deadlock in the 71st minute. A cross from Brittany Laird connected with teammate Mia Libby, who finished into the right corner for the game's only goal.
The Cardinals battled defensively throughout, limiting the Falcons' opportunities while looking to create chances of their own. Schwertfager finished the match with five saves against six shots on goal, held strong between the posts. Brooks recorded Otterbein's only shot, while Messiah held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
Otterbein will return to action next weekend, traveling to Adrian College for a Saturday, Sept. 6 matchup.
