Football returns to Westerville for Homecoming game

WESTERVILLE – On Homecoming weekend, the Otterbein University football team fell to Muskingum University, 37-13.

Brayden Bayles led the ground game with 103 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts, going 8 of 18 for 81 yards under center. Sophomore Antonio Armistead Jr. led the defense with eight total tackles.

After the Muskies dialed up a massive offensive performance last weekend, Otterbein held the visitors to field goals on both drives of the first quarter. A Cardinal miscue on a field goal attempt with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter allowed Muskingum to hold onto the 3-0 lead. The visitors got the ball back at their own 27, turning into three points at the other end. At the end of the first period, Muskingum led by a slim 6-0 margin.

The Muskies tacked onto their lead midway through the second with an 11-yard touchdown, building the advantage to 13-0. Otterbein responded on the ensuing drive with a 75-yard touchdown drive. On a third and one, Bayles rushed up the middle for a 53-yard touchdown to put the hosts on the board. A failed PAT and one more Muskingum score saw the Cardinals trailing 20-6 at the half.

Otterbein's second score came from a Rocco DeLorenzo touchdown in the fourth quarter. The freshman broke through the line and finished up the middle for a 19-yard score – the first of his collegiate career.

Next Saturday, the Cardinals head to No. 2 Mount Union for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
