Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cardinals cruise past Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – A dominant second half led the Otterbein University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory at Muskingum University.

The teams played to a scoreless first half, despite Otterbein racking up seven shots and five corners. The Cardinals broke through in the 54th minute after being awarded a free kick from 35 yards out. Senior Nate Werthmuller launched his left footed free kick to the upper right corner for a 1-0 advantage.

Less than two minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead when Mitch Wheeler scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season. An initial shot by the Cardinals was turned away, but the rebound bounced right to Wheeler who buried it to the back of the net to extend the lead.

Otterbein scored an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. Freshman Rome Jacob beat his defender to the near side and rifled a shot past the Muskingum keeper for the third Otterbein goal of the night.

The Cardinals held the edge in shots (15-8) and corners (7-2).

In goal, Jayden Burdine notched four saves in the clean sheet.

Otterbein will enjoy a week off before hosting Heidelberg. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. on Oct. 14.
