Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 20 men's basketball notches third straight victory

WESTERVILLE – Another 20-plus point performance from Jarius Jones helped lead the No. 20 Otterbein University men's basketball team to an 87-77 victory over Wilmington College. Jones led the Cardinals with 22 points, highlighted by an 8 of 10 effort from the foul line.

Julian Heckman delivered another strong performance, scoring 15 points and recording a  game-best seven assists while adding three steals. Senior Troy Scowden added 14 points off the bench, as Chase Garito was the fourth Cardinal to finish in double figures with 12 points.

A back and forth first half saw the Quakers take a 19-14 lead with just over 11 minutes to play in the opening stanza. Jones scored the next five Otterbein points to tie the score before Carter Piatt-Brown's transition layup vaulted the hosts ahead. Following a stop at the other end, Piatt-Brown found Jones for a triple, forcing Wilmington to call timeout.

Otterbein added buckets from Jones and Scowden to cap off a 14-0 run and hold a 28-19 advantage. The Quakers responded with a big run of their own, working to tie the game at 32-32. Aided by a late three off the hand of Reece Huber, the Cardinals closed out the half strong and led 44-38 at the break.

Out of the half, Garito converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Cardinals a nine point cushion. The momentum would carry its way through the rest of the half with Otterbein holding at least a two possession lead the rest of the way. With eight minutes remaining, Heckman and Micah Germany buried back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead to 14 points and secure the conference win.

The Cardinals turned 16 Quaker turnovers into 21 points. Jones and Dominic Theado collected four offensive boards apiece seeing Otterbein finish with 34 second chance points compared to Wilmington's 11. With eight rebounds, Jones paced Otterbein and added five assists and a team-high four steals.

Otterbein improves to 19-3 overall, 11-2 in the OAC. On Saturday, the Cardinals travel to Capital University in the Battle for the Oar. Tip off against the Comets is slated for 7 p.m.
