Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

MLAX powers past Allegheny in season opening win

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Five point performances from Max Luther and Jack Regruth powered the Otterbein University men's lacrosse team to a 17-6 win over Allegheny College in its season opener. The Cardinals netted 11 first half goals to secure the victory at Memorial Stadium.

Luther, a sophomore, earned a new career-best with his five goals. The five points and four assists marked new career-highs for Regruth as well.

It didn't take long for Luther to strike, scoring less than a minute in on an unassisted goal. Following two Allegheny goals, Otterbein scored the next nine goals to hold a 10-2 lead late in the first half. Luther's second goal tied the game at 2-2, and the Cardinals claimed the lead for good when Regruth found Zach Mulligan for his first goal of the afternoon. Regruth assisted on Otterbein's next goal from Nick King before Andrew Lewis's goal vaulted the hosts ahead 5-2 after one.

Zach Merrill connected with Marcus Wright to open the scoring in the second quarter. King, Mulligan, Lewis and Regruth all found the back of the net to cap off the nine-goal Otterbein run. The Gators scored twice late in the half, but the Cardinals capitalized on a man-up opportunity with Mulligan's third goal of the day off a feed from Lewis. At the half, Otterbein held an 11-5 edge over the Gators.

Otterbein outscored Allegheny 4-0 in the third, with Evan Crowe, Wright and Luther adding goals. Wright's second goal came on an EMO and Luther scored two more times in the period. In the fourth quarter, Jack Kennedy scored his first goal of the season and Luther's fifth strike completed the scoring.

In goal, junior Zach Courie earned the win, making three saves over three periods of action. Defensively, Otterbein was led by a career-high six caused turnovers by Nick Miller. Fellow poles Theron Cable (six ground balls) and Tyler Prudes (four ground balls) turned in solid performances. In addition to a two-goal, two-assist day, Lewis caused three turnovers.

At the faceoff X, Otterbein was 14 of 26. The Cardinals were near-perfect on the clear, converting 27 of 28 attempts. Otterbein outshot the Gators by a 60-25 margin, and limited Allegheny to 0 for 3 on EMOs. The Cardinals cashed in on 2 of their 4 EMOs.

Otterbein will head to Albion College next weekend to take on the defending MIAA Champions. First face off against the Brits is scheduled for 2 p.m.
