Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball kicks off 2026 season

BATAVIA, Ohio – On Opening Day, the Otterbein University baseball team came up just short, suffering a sweep to Mount St. Joseph. The Lions won game one 6-2 before taking the nightcap by a slim 10-9 margin.
GAME ONE: Mt. St. Joseph 6 Otterbein 2

The Lions broke out to a quick start, leading 4-0 after three. MSJ capitalized on an Otterbein error to score twice in the second before tacking on two more in the bottom of the third. The Cardinals got on the board in the top of the fourth, as Nolan James ripped a leadoff double to left center. Advancing to third on a groundout, James came around to score two batters later on an RBI groundout off the bat of Gavin Scott

MSJ responded in the home half of the inning, and tacked on one more in the sixth. Freshman Jack Barber drove in the second Cardinal run, driving in Cam Fisher. Fisher led off the inning with a double to right center for his first collegiate hit.

Otterbein managed just five hits, two for extra bases courtesy of the James and Fisher two-baggers. Geoffrey Siess added a hit and stole a base in the contest.

Maverick Rabe (0-1) threw 2.1 innings, fanning four and allowing four runs, three earned.

GAME TWO: Mt. St. Joseph 10 Otterbein 9

Otterbein broke out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap. Barber led off the game with a single through the left side and moved to second on a walk. With the bases loaded, freshman Evan Chmielewski singled down the line, driving in both Barber and James for an early advantage. The lead was short-lived, as MSJ pushed across three in the home half of the inning.

Barber drove in the tying run in the second on a sac fly. Fisher came around to score after drawing a leadoff walk on Barber's sac fly.

In the fifth, the Cardinals scored four runs off four hits and one Lion error to take a 7-3 lead. Barber was once again at the heart of it all, leading off the inning with a double to right center. Moving to third after a flyout, Barber crossed when James smacked a single to left. The big blow came off the bat of Calvin Mabry, who pounded a bases-clearing double, driving in Scott, Chmielewski and JT Gels to round out the inning.

MSJ once more answered – this time in dramatic fashion – putting up a 7-spot in the sixth. The Cardinals were able to respond in the top of the seventh to cut the Lion lead to one run. With two in scoring position and two away, Fisher drove in the pair with another hit to make it 10-9 Lions.Otterbein managed just one baserunner in the final two frames, unable to score the tying run.

Barber and Scott each recorded two hits for the Cardinals. Mabry's three RBI led the way, while Fisher and Chmielewski each drove in a pair. Siess swiped another bag, as James was 1 for 3 with two walks and an RBI.

Otterbein committed five errors in the game. Nick Mealey (0-1) threw four innings, allowing just three runs and striking out two. Sam Sethna fanned three over the final two innings for the Cardinals.
Next weekend, the Cardinals are scheduled to host Hope College for a three-game set. Friday's single game will begin at 2 p.m., with a Saturday twinbill scheduled for 12 and 3 p.m.
