Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Irby leads women's hoops past Marietta

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Big defensive stops down the stretch and clutch baskets helped the Otterbein women's basketball team secure a 71-66 win over Marietta College.

Kyla Irby was one of three double digit scorers for Otterbein, leading the way with 15 points and contributing four assists. Both Abby Rawlings and Kiara Hudgins added 13 points, as Rawlings led all players with seven dimes.

The Cardinals got off to a hot start, as a triple off the hand of Hudgins pushed the hosts up by 11. Marietta answered with back to back buckets, but a layup from Anna Waskiewicz saw Otterbein holding a 20-11 edge at the end of one. In the second, Otterbein inflated its lead to as many as 14 points, but the Pioneers continued to answer. Marietta ended the half on an 8-0 run to cut the Cardinal lead to five points at halftime.

A back and forth third quarter would set up a fourth where Otterbein took a six point lead into the final 10 minutes. The Pioneers pulled ahead twice in the period, but Hudgins responded with a bucket to leap the Cardinals back in front with 6:23 to play.

Almost a minute later, Hudgins found Irby who buried a triple to give Otterbein a 61-57 lead.

With 4:44 on the clock, Marietta tied the game at 61. That sparked a 6-0 Otterbein run with Nicole Terry sinking a pair of free throws. Two possessions later, Hudgins had a terrific block to keep Otterbein in front, and later pushed it to a two possession game with a layup. Sophomore Madilyn Stechschulte had her biggest bucket of the night with 1:54 remaining, coming off a beautiful feed from Rawlings. Stechschulte's basket saw the Cardinals take a 67-61 advantage. She led all players, bringing down seven rebounds.

Down the stretch, Hudgins and Irby made free throws to keep the Pioneers at bay. As a team, the Cardinals shot 54.5 percent (6 of 11) from three, with half of their makes coming from Irby (3 of 4).

On Saturday, the Cardinals head to Tiffin to take on Heidelberg in the second game of a men's and women's doubleheader. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
