Baseball falls to Olivet

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A late-inning rally fell short on Tuesday, as the Otterbein baseball team fell 5-3 to The University of Olivet. The Cardinals put the tying runner aboard in the eighth but could not capitalize with the big hit.

Otterbein broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. Nolan James was plunked to lead off the frame and moved 90 feet on a sac bunt but JT Gels. Manufacturing a run, sophomore Daniel Uhl crushed a double to center, driving in James for the first run of the game.

The Comets scored all five runs in the home half of the fifth. Two home runs were the difference in the inning, with Olivet belting 2-run and 3-run blasts.

In the seventh, another hit batsman came around to score for the Cardinals. Anthony Dunlap's HBP was followed by another sac bunt, this one off the bat of Max Rubins. The junior moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed when Calvin Mabry lifted a sacrifice fly to center, giving Otterbein its second run and trailing 5-2 after seven.

Gels smacked a two-out single in the eighth and moved into scoring position after Uhl drew a seven-pitch walk. With two on and two out, freshman Cam Fisher drove in Gels with a run-scoring single, putting the Cardinals within two. Despite the go-ahead run at the plate, Olivet worked out of the jam with a fielder's choice.

Mabry and Fisher recorded two hits apiece. Andrew Kitts and Russ Wight combined for eighth scoreless frames on the bump, with Wight not allowing a baserunner and fanning four.

The Cardinals will enjoy a day off on Wednesday before resuming play on Thursday. Otterbein will look to avenge the loss with another matchup against Olivet, beginning at 3 p.m.
